Over many years of working in leadership roles, particularly in environments where the pressure is real and the consequences of decisions are significant, Steve began to reflect more deeply on the nature of leadership itself.
Much of the discussion around leadership tends to focus on outcomes, performance and strategy, yet the human experience of leadership is often far less visible. Leaders carry responsibility for people, culture and difficult decisions, and many do so without having opportunities to step back and think about what leadership really asks of them.
From an EmpathyWorks perspective, compassionate leadership is not about being soft. It is about clarity, courage and humanity in difficult environments. And in the complex organisations we lead today, it may well be one of the most important leadership capabilities of the future.
